Railroad-Era Poston, South Carolina

What the archive can presently document about the railroad junction and what still requires independent railroad and land records.

Primary newspaper evidence

What is presently documented

The 1916 County Record notice is the archive’s anchor evidence for the railroad-era identity of Poston. It identifies the place as a Seaboard railroad junction and directly associates the Poston name with Andrew Poston.

What remains to be added

The newspaper is powerful evidence, but it is not the complete railroad file. The archive still needs deeds, right-of-way instruments, plats, depot or siding records, railroad maps, timetables, and corporate records that independently document how the junction was established and operated.

Important distinction

The older Ellison / Allison landing landscape predates the railroad identity. The railroad should be treated as a major transition in transportation and naming, not as proof that no community existed before it.
