Genealogical Evidence Guide

South Carolina Poston Family Branches

A source-conscious guide to the branch structure used by the revised family genealogy.

Genealogical framework

Correcting the older family shorthand

The revised genealogy distinguishes the early South Carolina framework of John Poston and Anthony (“Antney”) Poston from the later Andrew Poston born in 1829. This correction matters because Andrew should not be collapsed into the eighteenth-century migration generation.

The branch associated with Andrew Poston

The compiled genealogy places Anthony’s son Hugh Poston (1791–1846) as the father of Andrew Poston (1829–1916). It also identifies a later Hugh Poston, born 1835, whose daughter Louella belongs to the close founder-linked family branch used in the modern genealogy.

Primary-source status

The archive still needs the underlying Bible, probate, census, marriage and deed records necessary to verify the branch structure one relationship at a time.
